DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY ANATOMY AND HISTOLOGY

Departmental profile:
Welcome to the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Histology. The Department of Veterinary Anatomy & Histology of JIS College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (JISCOVAS) came into existence in 2025, as one of the first departments, and this department came into existence under the West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences (WBUAFS), Belgachia, Kolkata, West Bengal.
The building of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Histology was designed as a multi-disciplinary department with responsibilities in instruction, research and continuing education in the disciplines as gross, microscopic, applied, comparative, neuro, surgical and developmental anatomy. We are having good laboratories like laboratory of gross anatomy, histology, comparative anatomy, neuroanatomy, surgical anatomy, applied anatomy, developmental anatomy; also tissue processing and staining laboratory which are full of all the modern instruments for catering research in the realm of veterinary anatomy.
Faculty members of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy and Histology is regularly involved in academic and institutional capacity building in our college. They are involved in skeleton preparation of domestic animals and birds which are the obligatory and praiseworthy. Faculty members also serve as life members of different professional groups, societies, review committee, student advisory committee and organizing committee. As a new institution, till now we are in primary stage regarding research but we are always encouraging our faculties to take part in research along with teaching.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHYSIOLOGY AND BIOCHEMISTRY


Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Physiology and Biochemistry is a pioneering department under JISCOVAS and well-known by catering education and research on basic and applied physiology with its underlying mechanism of domestic animal and avian biological systems providing leadership in this realm.
The department has good laboratory with molecular physiology, immunobiology, cell biology, atomic absorption, electro-physiology units. The sophisticated instruments viz. AAS, Gel-doc, PCR, (-) 80ÂșC deep freeze, biological safety cabinet, UV-VIS Spectrophotometer, ELISA washer and reader, cooling centrifuge, USG, ECG, Inverted florescence microscope, Bio-freezer etc. are utilized by the students, researchers and teachers of the various departments of JISCOVAS as well as also other institutes to complete their scientific programmes precisely.

DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK PRODUCTION MANAGEMENT

 

Departmental profile:
The Department of Livestock Production Management has valuable aims to increase the production of the animals and animal products through copacetic farm management practices to make it a sustainable unit as well. With these objectives, the department of livestock production management has been started to pose the role on teaching, research and extension activities here. Additionally, this department is serving as a nodal facility for innovative ideas for livestock development indeed.
The laboratory of this department is equipped with smart classroom with audio visual aids, podium with collar mike facilities, livestock housing demo boards, livestock housing models, animal exhibits, livestock handling and restraining equipments for different species, breed charts for easy understanding of students.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MICROBIOLOGY

 

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Microbiology has been established as per VCI norms to pursue B.V.Sc & A.H. Degree program. The Departments also executes diagnostic works, research and extension activities in the field of Veterinary Microbiology on regular basis. It is also involved in skill development and capacity building programmes. It offers several important trainings in Veterinary Bacteriology, Mycology, Immunology & Serology, Virology and Microbial/Molecular Biotechnology. Nowadays, Anti-microbial Resistance (AMR) is our prime focus also.
The Department of Veterinary Microbiology is enriched of various research laboratories and facilities, for example, Bacteriology lab, Virology lab, Mycology lab, Immunology and Serology lab, Molecular biology lab, AMR lab etc. The facilities of this department include PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, FAT, SDS-PAGE, Gel electrophoresis, Western blot, Immune/serological profiling making, vaccine production facilities etc.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PATHOLOGY

 

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Pathology is carrying the responsibility of imparting knowledge in the field of Department of Veterinary Pathology to II year B.V.Sc & A.H. students. The department is also providing services and support to other departments of the college. The Department has diagnostic, post mortem examination, histopathology and clinical pathology facilities as well. Post mortem of animals and birds is our daily practice especially post-mortem of avian species is a very common among them. Clinico-pathological tests are also mentionable.
The Department of Veterinary Pathology has several research laboratories and facilities, for example, Histopathology lab, Post-mortem lab, Immunology lab, Molecular pathology lab etc.
The pathological tests facilities of this department include PCR, RT-PCR, ELISA, FAT, SDS-PAGE, Gel electrophoresis, Western blot, Immunological profiling making, Vaccine pathology, Rabies test etc.

 

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL GENETICS AND BREEDING

Departmental profile:
The Department of Animal Genetics & Breeding takes part in undergraduate teaching for B.V.Sc& AH programme. The department has sophisticated laboratory facilities and necessary infrastructure as per VCI norms. The Department is engaged in the teaching of various courses in the area of Animal Breeding, Animal Genetics, Biostatistics and Computer Application courses at the undergraduate level.
Laboratory of animal genetics and Laboratory of breeding are important to mention here which are really arranged with modern research facilities and instruments. Gene mapping, sequencing, Gene banking etc. are our frontier focus for a better progress.

DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL NUTRITION

Departmental profile:
The Department of Animal Nutrition is one of the rising departments of the college. To offer undergraduate education and transfer of reasonable knowledge and technologies in the area of animal nutrition are the key responsibilities. Beside the courses, the undergraduate students also get the opportunity to “learn by doing” of hay making, silage preparation, urea ammoniated straw preparation etc. Animal nutrition lab has the abilities to formulate ration for the animals and birds automatically by machine and software, feed analysis, feed & growth ratio analysis, proximate analysis etc. The department also offers frequent field and farm visits to broaden the spectra of learning.
The departmental faculties benefited the farmers through laboratory to land programme during farmers-meet at JISCOVAS adopted villages.

 

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PHARMACOLOGY AND TOXICOLOGY

Departmental profile:
The Veterinary Pharmacology is the study of the mechanisms by which drugs alter physiological, biochemical and cellular activities in living organisms. It is also actively involved in NDD (New Drug Discovery). Veterinary Toxicology is focused on understanding how chemical agent’s produces toxicity in living organisms. This Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology was established along with the inception of the college. Ever since its inception the department is active in teaching, research and extension activities. The Department is engaged in undergraduate teaching programme abiding by latest the VCI curriculum strictly. Furthermore, the department has frontier plan to do some necessary research works and drug trial studies in collaboration with several pharmaceutical and Ayurveda drug companies in India.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PUBLIC HEALTH AND EPIDEMIOLOGY

 

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Public Health & Epidemiology is imparting education to 3rd year B.V.Sc & A.H. students. This department was started in 2025 with other departments as per VCI guidelines. The mandate of the Department of Veterinary Public Health is teaching, research and extension in the field of zoonoses, environmental hygiene, food hygiene, food safety and quality control. Faculties of this department are well-trained and experienced. The department has keen interest to work on fungal, bacterial and parasitic zoonoses and has target to conduct studies on patterns of emerging zoonoses, human brucellosis, cysticercosis, sarcocystosis, leptospirosis, salmonellosis, aeromonas infections etc. that are posing major human health hazards in the region.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY PARASITOLOGY

Departmental profile:
This Department of Veterinary Parasitology was established along with the inception of the college. The department is engaged in undergraduate teaching programme abiding by the latest VCI curriculum. The department is dedicated to teaching of B. V. Sc. & A. H. student in the class room and laboratory about the different aspects of Parasitology and related infestations. The department has excellent laboratory facilities and adequate infrastructures to cater to the needs of undergraduate teaching and extension activities. The Department also participates in different village camps for the farmers to acquaint them about the baleful effects caused by the parasites and also how to overcome the parasites related problems as well.
This department is intended to familiarize the students with the essential facts and concepts of Veterinary Parasitology. Emphasis is placed on diagnosis, pathogenesis and management of parasitic infections. The biology of parasites of major Veterinary importance are stressed to impart the understanding of control of parasitism.

DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOK PRODUCT TECHNOLOGY

Departmental profile:
The prime objective of this Department is to impart knowledge in the field of livestock product technology. The Department was mainly engaged in undergraduate teaching programme formulated by VCI. In addition to this, the department aims at serving as a nodal facility for innovative products development and also imparting the skills to the progressive farmers/stake holders/entrepreneurs etc. The department is also providing services and support to other departments of the college in regular basis.
This department has the facilities like Pilot Dairy Plant, Quality control laboratory, Dairy Microbiology laboratory, Dairy Nutraceutical Analysis lab, Spray drier, Non IBR boiler, Homogenizer, Spiral plater, Ice candy machine, Vacuum packaging machine, Blast freezer, Ice cream freezer etc.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY AND ANIMAL HUSBANDRY EXTENSION EDUCATION

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education offers undergraduate courses in the field of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education. The department is actively engaged in extension activities like conducting NSS camps and Treatment cum vaccination camps in the nearby or reported villages by the college. The department is engaged in preparation of extension materials and publishes various leaflets, pamphlets, folders for the animal husbandry activities and distributes to livestock farmers in regular basis for public awareness.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY MEDICINE

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Medicine is actively involved in academic and institutional capacity building in the college. The faculties of this department prepare practical manuals, lecture notes and power point presentations to the student community for easy understanding. They have direct role in animal hospital/clinics for the treatment of animals and birds on rotation basis. The faculty members serve as life members of different professional groups, student advisory committees and in organizing committees. Faculties involved in the conduct of seminars and symposiums of the college related to World Tuberculosis Day, World Veterinary Day, World Zoonosis Day & World Rabies Day every year.
The department of veterinary medicine has several referral clinics as-Endoscopy Referral Clinic, Large Animal Medicine Referral Clinic, Small Animal Critical Care, Nephrology Referral Clinic, Cardiology Referral Clinic, Ultrasound Referral Clinic, and Oncology Referral Clinic etc.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY SURGERY AND RADIOLOGY

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology is full-fledged department with all modern and latest instruments and appliances. This department mandates for teaching in various disciplines of the subject viz. general surgery, anaesthesiology, radiology, orthopedics and experimental surgery. The teaching programme of the department have been planned to provide effective practical training/classes to the undergraduate students. Apart from offering courses to the students of B.V.Sc. & A.H, degree in Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, the faculty members collaborate with the Veterinary Clinical Complex for internship programme and to offer clinical practical courses to the undergraduate students. The faculty members of this department have always followed time honoured tradition of team work and made collective efforts to maintain high standards of teaching here.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY GYNAECOLOGY AND OBSTETRICS

Departmental profile:
The Department of Veterinary Gynaecology & Obstetrics imparts teaching on large and small animal reproduction, infertility problems, obstetrical approach and management towards animals, seminology and cryopreservation. The faculty members of this department are strongly associated with academic and institutional capacity building in the college. The Department also contributes in ambulatory services, infertility treatment camps in collaboration with veterinary clinical complex in different remote and far away villages.
This department has two fully air-conditioned seminar halls, both equipped with audio visual aids. This department has also equipment as-Microscopes, Refrigerated centrifuge, pH meter, Incubator, Hot air oven, Electronic weighing balance, Vaginoscope, Ultrasound scanner, PCR, RT-PCR, Semen analyser, Blood bank, Plastic surgery room, AI apparatus etc.

DEPARTMENT OF VETERINARY CLINICAL COMPLEX

Departmental profile:
The Veterinary Clinical Complex is an integral part of B.V.Sc. & A.H. study curriculum and very necessary to be a good veterinarian. It has separate building comprise of separate units for small and large animals. Here students are trained for clinical activities and clinical diagnostic techniques. The activities of the department are headed under the supervision of the Director of Clinics who is Co-Supervised by the Hospital Superintendent and assisted by other teachers. The Department offers 24x7 veterinary medical and ambulatory services. The Department also conducts Vaccination and Treatment camps by the help of this department in remote villages which are not connected by road in nearby areas. The ambulatory van of JISCOVAS reaches to different nearby veterinary hospital at least twice in a week with batches of budding doctors where they practice medicine, surgery and A.I techniques under guidance of experienced faculty members.

DEPARTMENT OF LIVESTOCK FARM COMPLEX

Departmental profile:
The Veterinary Council of India has made a provision for instructional farm complex. The JISCOVAS fulfils all the criteria accurately for this unit. Instructional farm complex has different livestock units viz. cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, equine, rabbit and poultry (Layer and Broiler). The college is rich in fodder museum in which different varieties of green fodder are implanted that fully covered a bigger part of this green campus.
The various livestock units as well as fodder unit have proved very useful for the benefits of the farmer as well as trainees of young unemployed youth personnel. Besides that, students are taken for hands on training to specialised commercial farms. The classes at different centres are duly attended by teachers of different Departments of the faculty; the teachers of the concerned Departments extended their utmost help & co-operation to run the academic programme successfully. The practical manual for the respective courses has been developed with the active help of course instructors/teachers.
