Veterinary Education is as old as our civilization. Formal Veterinary education in India began in 1862 with the establishment of an army Veterinary School in Pune. The establishment of a Veterinary Research Laboratory in India took place in 1889 in Pune which later on transformed into Indian Veterinary Research Institute at Mukteswar and Izatnagar. Bengal Veterinary College came into existence in 1893 in Calcutta which is now flourished into a full phased University, West Bengal University of Animal and Fishery Sciences, Kolkata.
