Life & Times of Sardar Jodh Singh

Late Sardar Jodh Singh - Founder of JIS Group

Late Sardar Jodh Singh, fondly remembered as "Bapuji," was born in 1920 into a Sikh family in a remote village of Montgomery district in the former Punjab Province, now in Pakistan. Following the Indo–Pak Partition, his family migrated to India in search of a new beginning amidst challenging circumstances.

Possessing remarkable determination and entrepreneurial vision, he initially explored business opportunities in Ludhiana before eventually turning eastward towards Kolkata. In 1952, Sardar Jodh Singh arrived in Kolkata, a city that soon became his permanent home and the foundation of his future achievements.

He began his journey with a modest dairy business, which, through relentless hard work, honesty, and perseverance, soon grew into a flourishing enterprise. Over time, he became one of the leading suppliers of milk to prominent dairy product companies in Kolkata, establishing himself as a respected businessman with strong values and an unwavering work ethic.

However, his vision extended far beyond business success. Deeply committed to the cause of education and social empowerment, Sardar Jodh Singh laid the foundation of an educational movement that would transform thousands of lives across Eastern India.

In 1998, he established an engineering college in Asansol, marking the beginning of his journey in the education sector. This was followed by the establishment of JIS College of Engineering in Kalyani in the year 2000. With each institution, his dream of providing quality technical and professional education to young minds grew stronger.

Continuing his mission, in 2003 he founded Guru Nanak Institute of Dental Sciences and Research at Panihati, Kolkata, which became the first private dental college in the state of West Bengal. This milestone further strengthened his contribution to higher education and healthcare education in the region.

From there onwards, there was no looking back. Under the visionary leadership, dedication, and tireless efforts of Sardar Jodh Singh, the JIS Group evolved into one of the largest and most respected educational conglomerates in Eastern India. Today, the group comprises 26 institutes offering more than 126 academic programmes, with over 35,000 students enrolled across diverse disciplines.

On 25 January 2018, Sardar Jodh Singh departed for his heavenly abode, leaving behind a legacy built on vision, perseverance, compassion, and service to society. His never-ending zeal, determination, and commitment to empowering lives through education continue to inspire generations.

Following his demise, his dynamic and visionary son, Mr. Taranjit Singh, took forward the dream cherished by his father — a dream of transforming society and empowering lives through knowledge, education, and innovation.
